How They Built Houses in Japan. In Boston. In 1979.

In 1979, the Boston Children’s Museum, in commemoration of 20 years of Sister City partnership with Kyoto, shipped & received a gift of 43 crates to the US. Accompanying the crates, which contained the pieces of a kyo-no-machiya style townhouse were Japanese carpenters who over several months put the house back together. They had me at “Planing a Beam” by the carpenter in the Honda shirt.

Nice article here from Harvard Magazine on the project.
