Shoji Screen Appendix I

In finishing this first screen, one thing not addressed was where to place it or how to install it. Installation is not currently a viable option, nor necessary and I prefer to concentrate on improving the quality of the work itself.

So the alternative was to build a couple of small horses to provide a simple stand. I had some rectangular Black Walnut blocks leftover from my dining room table project measuring about 3″x4″x7″. They had some wormwood marks and crazy figuring which made for a challenge to plane but with a little work and some targeted chamfering they came out just fine. And the Walnut works as a pleasant contrast to the Poplar of the shoji.

All in all, the small stands make for a satisfactory presentation piece, one that follows both form and function and fits nicely in the front room where it can catch the morning sun.
